2002-2003 SEASON OPENS WITH TOURNEY

It was with great anticipation that a majority of the oldtimer hockey players went into their furnace rooms or garages to retrieve their hockey equipment from last year. Many, of course, had not even washed it, wanting instead to retain memories of games gone by. For some, this was the reason that they did not have many visitors this past year.

The pre-season tourney was an opportunity to meet old friends and make new acquaintances as each team tries to “come together” for this annual event. Of course, many of the veterans knew what it was like to play three games within 24 hours and the wiley ones came up with many excuses to miss the third game Saturday: have to wash the car, close the cottage( for the second time), my mother-in-law is coming to town and I have to buy more beer or my daughter(son) is getting married, I think.

After the dust and ice chips had settled, the eventual winner of the “A” championship was Bradley and Associates, defeating Foley Signs in a shootout. Brent’s players took a vote and did not let him take part in the shootout because they feared that his shot would miss the net and shatter the plexiglass thus delaying the game indefinitely.

The winner of the “B” championship game was Jeff McGuire’s Karson Kartage defeating  Bob Lackey’s, Karter Korners . For this, they qualified for a sleigh ride around the village of Carp (  a date yet to be determined)

On a more sombre note, the League would like to wish Dan Diner a speedy recovery from the heart attack he occurred while playing the first game of the tourney. His presence will not be missed by the many forwards he has introduced himself to over the years.
