Flyers Win MOTH Mid-Season Tourney

Thursday, November 1... With a goal and assist apiece, Dean Usher and Rick Vaughn paced the Hardtke Flyers to a 4-1 win over the Pub. In the other night’s action, Dave Greenly notched the shutout and Rick Renaud and Steve Robinson tickled the twine in a 2-zip victory for Newton and Co. over CB Richard Ellis Bruins.

Friday, November 2 … Capital Office Interior Hawks rode the hot goaltending of Donnie Gray and Andrew Wilson potted the game-winner in a 2-1 win against the Yorkton Capitals. In the nightcap, play-off style goaltending again came to the fore, with Steelcase’s Russ Pearson steering aside a few rubber trees in the 2-0 whitewash of the Leafs. Gerry Nault and Al Hamilton lit the lamp for the Kings

Saturday, November 3 … “A” Side Semi-Finals … The Flyers advanced to the “A” Final with a pair of Usher goals helping them to a 3-1 win over the Bruins. They would meet the Hawks, who eked out another close one, 2-1 over the Kings -- thanks to more outstanding goaltending from Gray and a game-winning, blueline blast from Dan “Hammer” Kelly.

“B” Side Semi-Finals … Two big goals from gritty Mike “Scratch” Byron, bad back and all, helped the Leafs dispose of the Yorkton Capitals 3-1. Newton and Co.’s Phil Byrne and Dana Carter scored goals 16 seconds apart in the first period and Big Bill Boivin barred the door in their 4-0 shutout against the Pub.

“B” Final … Newton and Co. 3, Leafs 2 … With 5:29 to go in the game, Mark “Bucky” Clost fired the game-winner, breaking a 2-2 tie. Phil Byrne and Kirk Kealey had the other Newton and Co. markers. Jimmy Cooper and Steve Moore replied for the Leafs.

“A” Final … Hardtke Flyers 4, Capital Office Interior Hawks 2 … Flyers defenseman Glen McCurdie wired a blueline wristshot past Hawks netminder Donnie Gray’s glove to snap a 2-2  early in the final period. The Hawks gave it the ol’ college try, playing with three spares. Chris Berkers added the empty netter in a furious final minute of play.

Handing out the tournament hardware … Rick Vaughn received the tournament MVP, Dan Kelly collected the Best Defenseman award, Rob Carkner nabbed Best Goalie and Big Bill Boivin was the “B” Final MVP. Snappy-looking gym bags were donated by Dieter Hardtke to the Flyers and Senators tickets from Molson went to Newton and Co.
