PLAYOFFS-ROUND #1

Toss out the regular season stats: toss out team finishes and toss around all the post regular season clichés, for in round one, we saw it all. The top two teams were upset by the bottom feeders and the third place team almost met the same fate.

The red-eye saw A & B Sports, behind spectacular net minding of Ed Lanthier, take a seemingly commanding first period 3-0 lead only to see it evaporate in the second as Karters Korner fought back with three unanswered goals to salvage a 3-3 draw. Scoring for Godin’s team were Danny Barrett, Mike Tierney and Greg O’Brien. Tallying for Lackey’s go-karters were Eric Lake, Guy D’Aloisio and Mark Brooks.

Business Allies and the back doctors demonstrated how playoff hockey is to be played as the 2-1 victory by Roy’s squad had close checking, many near misses and sound goaltending. Garth Rogers and Chris Loney provided the necessary fire power for the win. Dave Petrie scored the lone Chiropractic goal.

The mid-morning classic saw a “Broad Street Bullies” type game as over 30 minutes in penalties was assessed by the zebra shirts. When all was said and done, Hawkin’s Sports Club had eked out a 4-3 win over Foley’s Signs. Rookie Gilles Desjardins tallied twice with Mike Foley scoring the other. Filling the net for the victors were Terry Schaeffer, Jeff Snyder, Don Fraser and Larry Sillicker.

The pre-luncheon match saw the first of two upsets as McGuire’s 9th place team knocked off Bradley and Associates, 4-2 behind the two goal performance of Jim Mousseau with singles going to Tony Tierney and Chris Troughton. Bradley’s team ran into penalty problems and were only able to muster goals by Bill McDonald and Ross Farmer. Brent has issued a strict curfew for his squad until their next game in hopes of having his players being more focused.

The luncheon game saw another upset as the garbage men, sans captain, piled it on the bus drivers, 7-1 behind the outstanding hat trick performance of Brian Langill. Also contributing were Stu Curry, Barry Dowdall, Dave Graham and Bert Zeyl. Spoiling Phil Ouellette’s shutout with only five seconds left was Peter Capello with a ‘draw shot’ from the point. When asked why the huge turn around from finishing in the cellar, Lloyd Stuckless said that the team rose to the occasion as their captain was absent. This scribe did write weeks ago to beware of a last place team playing well in the playoffs.
