Chad Kuffner had 5 goals and 5 assists as Cheongju held on to 15-13 in a wild one at Namsun Ice rink in Daejeon.
Cheongju appeared to be cruising to an easy win before Daejeon decided to show up. Brian Hanwell led the comeback and finished with 4 goals and 2 assists. Daejeon got within one goal before Kuffner sealed it with his fifth and his teams 15th goal.
Jon Deblois played a stellar game for both teams. In a bizarre move, Cheongju traded Deblois to Daejeon midway through the game, for a bottle of water. Deblois responded by helping lead Daejeon, who had been trailing by 6 goals, back to respectability. Deblis finished with 2 goals and 2 assists for Ceongju and 1 goal and 3 assists for Daejeon.
Jason French had 4 goals and assist for Cheongju, who also had 2 goals from Caleb MacIvor and one from Waylon Chinski.
Jim Toombs recorded a hat trick and one assist for Daejeon. Hong Gi-Young and Ken Vantour had 2 goals apiece. Michael Jones and Im Chae Sam had one each for the losers.
Rick Weldon, playing with players skates and stick, was solid in goal, blaming his GAA on the equipment.
Game 2 of this heated rivalry takes place February 25, again at Namsun Ice rink |
