The Bedford Blues won the ESSO Atlantic bantam AAA hockey championship yesterday. In an exciting final at the Halifax Civic Arena, the Blues edged the Cole Harbour Red Wings 3-2 in overtime. Tournament MVP Colin MacCormack, on a pass from Erin King, netted the winner short-handed 3:44 into the extra period. King also scored two goals. Corey Banfield responded with both goals for the Wings. Bedford had advanced with a 3-1 semifinal victory over the Charlottetown Abbies earlier in the day. Cole Harbour blanked the Inverness Lightning 4-0 in its semifinal. Michael Knowles and Ian MacIsaac of the Blues shared the top goalie award. Luke Beck and Colin Gughes of the Abbies were named as the top scorer and best defenceman, respectively. Cole Harbour and Inverness dominated the all-star team with two selections apiece. Representing the Wings were defenceman Dominic Tweed and forward Chad Anderson. Picked from the Lightning were netminder Garry Cummings and defenceman Jared MacEachern. King and Beck, both forwards, rounded out the team. |
