v The lacrosse/hockey box is Centrally Located in Greater Victoria & is used by many members of the surrounding communities. v We want the City of Victoria, Parks & Recreation to upgrade the facility for the members of the community to use & for future generations. CURRENT CONDITION OF THE BOX:
v The condition of the lacrosse/hockey box is getting worse over the years. v The box has not seen a huge overhaul in years. Poor Conditions, keeps players & teams away. v At our request during the last few years some repairs have been made by the City. v The City does what is needed to keep it minimally safe, however is also minimally adequate condition of the playing surface & the boards v Surface: The surface is in rough shape, its cracking & is constantly sinking in certain spots, which makes it dangerous as well; whether on foot or on rollerblades. v Boards: Boards are getting worse, where repairs where done, they are rotting again, leaving holes & potential safety hazard to players. v Benches: The doors on the players benches have old hinges & locks & are difficult to use, plus most are missing majority of their bolts & hardware. BENEFITS FOR THE COMMUNITY:
v Our goal would be to see Topaz Park be one of the best facilities in the Greater Victoria Area. v Once it’s the best lacrosse/hockey box in Greater Victoria, people will go out of their way to play here. v Presently members of the community drive to other boxes in different municipalities for sporting activities, simply due to the condition of the surface & boards at Topaz Park’s lacrosse/hockey box. v Building a durable, long term box; will result in fewer repairs and save money in the long Term. v This creates a safe place for the members of community to play sports. v Currently there are no lights at the lacrosse/hockey box. Lights would allow more use of thee facility for community. v The City of Victoria, Parks & Recreation will see their investmentt, in return: more permits will be purchased to guarantee playtime at the New Box. Plus the community will see the real return, in a strong, healthy, safe community; playing sports. USING DURABLE MATERIALS FOR REBUILD:
v Surface: A synthetic tile floor, which can be placed easily over the existing surface, the tile would not sink or deteriorate. (the spots on the surface now that need to be addressed, need to be dug up and refilled, before tile is placed over that section) This is the same synthetic tile system is by Sport Court system that is in place outside the Kirby’s Source for Sports store located at 894 Cloverdale Ave. v Boards: Materials such as plastic boards that would not rot or decay. v Benches: Players benches covered (similar to the soccer field benches at Topaz Park). v Net Lockup: A lock up area for sports teams (that have purchased the permit) to leave their nets and gear. v Lights: Adding lights & a clock to the facility is a great potential, to increase permits sold for night time hours. v Bleachers: Area for members of the community to sit and enjoy games at the lacrosse/hockey box. REACHING OUR GOALS:
v Rally friends, families, community members & businesses to support this project. v Petitions from surrounding communities, local business, local sports teams, family and friend. v Promote this topic by using TV, newspapers, radio, online blogging, Facebook and Twitter. FUNDRAISING:
v Fundraising such as bottle drives, car washes, silent auctions, food stands, skills competition or tournament, concert & comedy night are just a few ideas to help raise the funds needed to meet this goal. v With all of the efforts made by Topaz Hockey, players, families, friends and community members we would want the City of Victoria Parks & Recreation to match dollar for dollar what we raise for this project.
